Student Visa

The 571 visa is for secondary school students. It is for those who have completed primary school and are studying in junior or senior secondary schools but want to come to Australia for their secondary schooling from year 7 to 12, equivalent to the secondary school years in China.

Suitable candidates for 571 visa:

Primary school graduates, current junior secondary school students and current senior secondary school students; students intending to enrol in year 10 or above in Australian secondary schools should be less than 18 years of age; less than 19 years of age for year 11 and less than 20 years of age for year 12.

Requirements:

1. Duration of secondary school studies in Australia shall not be less than 16 months.
2. English requirements: if the applicant is less than 16 years of age, no IELTS result is required; if the applicant is 16 years of age or older, English requirements may vary, but application may be made for a waiver.
3. Guardian: if the applicant is under 18 years of age, a guardian must be arranged in Australia.
4. Work rights: For students 18 years of age or above, work is permitted after the official commencement of the course, but the maximum hours of work are 40 hours per fortnight. If the student was under the age of 18 when they initially received the 571 visa, he/she will need to apply for a work permit before starting work.

Vocational education and training courses, including the following: A certificate IV (except ELICOS) of at least 12 months duration; a VET diploma; a VET advanced diploma; a vocational graduate certificate; a vocational graduate diploma.

Suitable candidates for 572 visa:

Students who have already completed senior high school in China; students who have already completed school at vocational or technical certificate, diploma, advanced diploma or bachelor levels.

Requirements:
IELTS requirements

Students can enrol directly into the main course if they have an overall IELTS score of 5.5 or above (some schools have higher requirements). Students with an overall IELTS score of 5.0 will need to attend up to 20 weeks of English training and achieve an equivalent result of IELTS 5.5 or above before starting the main course.

Financial requirements

A money deposit with a financial institution for at least three consecutive months immediately before the date of the visa application. The fund provider can be the applicant, or the applicant’s spouse, parents or grandparents; funds from applicant’s uncles and aunts who are Australian citizens or permanent residents or citizens of New Zealand may also be eligible. These funds must be cash deposits in bank accounts that can be withdrawn. Stocks, wealth management funds and other financial products are not accepted. These funds must be kept in the account while the visa application is being processed.

Student Loans

If the applicant cannot provide bank deposits of more than 3 months, bank loans may also be accepted. There are two types of Student loans currently accepted by the Australian Immigration Department: cash collateral (e.g. more amount in loan than cash held), or real estate mortgage.

This visa is for overseas students undertaking a Bachelor degree, Graduate Certificate / Graduate Diploma or Master degree by Coursework.

Suitable candidates for 573 visa:

Applicants who have graduated from senior secondary school or equivalent level to year 12 (need to provide the senior secondary school graduation certificate and the college entrance exam score); applicants who have completed senior secondary year 2 or equivalent level to year 11 (need to provide senior secondary school examination results, may apply for Foundation Course); technical and vocational school graduates and current advanced diploma and university students; applicants in Australia who have finished Certificate IV or higher.

Features of the 573 visa:

The valid visa period is determined by the duration of the course, and students can extend their visas if the studies have not been completed by the visa expiry date.

Work rights: visa holders and accompanying dependants must not start work until the primary visa holder has commenced the course in Australia. After commencing the course, visa holders and accompanying dependants can work up to 40 hours per fortnight.

After graduation: current visa policies provide that bachelor degree or higher graduates can apply for a 2 year post-study work visa.

IELTS requirements

There are 2 streams of 573 visa: streamlined and non-streamlined.

For applicants under the streamlined process, language requirements depend primarily on individual university admission requirements. There is no requirement for IELTS results for visa applications.

For applicants not under the streamlined process, the minimum requirement is IELTS 5.0 or above. However, universities usually have their special requirements for IELTS, usually an overall score of 6.0 or above.

Financial requirements

There is no deposit requirement for applicants under the streamlined process, but applicants need to be able to prove that they have sufficient funds available.
